03 / Eat & Drink
Good food, cold drinks and a sunset on the river.
St George punches above its weight when it comes to eating and drinking. Here is where to go.
Riverside pubs
Two pubs sit right on the Balonne River — both worth your time, for different reasons.
The Australian Hotel
The Aussie is the more popular of the two riverside pubs and the one most locals will point you to. It serves meals and has a great spot to watch the river. A reliable choice any night of the week.
The St George Hotel
The George does not serve meals, but you are guaranteed a seat in the beer garden to enjoy the sunset. Sometimes that is exactly what you need — a cold drink and a view with no rush.
Cobb & Co Hotel
On the main street and the only other pub open in town. More of an old-school locals vibe — unpretentious, friendly and exactly what a country pub should be.
Cafes
Cafes are in abundance, mostly down Henry Street. Here are the ones worth knowing about.
DeliCate Cafe
Easy to spot with its bold black-and-white striped awning on Henry Street. A lovely spot with a wonderful alfresco dining area out front — great for breakfast or a long lunch.
The Old Newsagent
Barber, coffee and gelato all under one roof — the kind of place that makes you glad you stopped. Funky, characterful and genuinely worth a visit. One of the more memorable spots in town.
Farmhouse Cafe
A solid local favourite on Henry Street. Good coffee and a relaxed atmosphere — the kind of place you come back to every morning.
Geiger's
A locals' favourite and a good sign that the coffee is worth ordering. Unpretentious and reliable.
Handistore St George
A short walk from Little Anchorage and handy for a takeaway coffee or a quick bite. Good to know about if you are heading out early.
